About the honoree...
Stephen H. Gariepy is a partner at the 120-member law firm of Hahn Loeser & Parks, LLP, where he serves as co-chair of its estate planning, estate administration and business succession group. Consisting of 20 attorneys and eight paralegals, his estate team has grown to one of the largest and most respected in its field. Steve focuses his practice on leading-edge estate planning techniques for business owners, families and individuals. His ability to design creative and comprehensive plans - and make them practical and understandable - has garnered him a practice that is national in scope. A dominant focus of Steve's practice is guiding owners of privately-held companies through succession planning, leveraged gifting, tax-free sales, valuation discounting, shifting voting control and equity among active and non-active owners and heirs, split-dollar and other insurance plans, incentive compensation, stock transfer restrictions, business reorganizations, buy-outs, asset protection (domestic and offshore), and charitable foundations. He is often called upon to resolve difficult issues that arise in the dynamic relationships among business owners and family members. He also assists executors and trustees in the often complex role of estate and trust administration.
Steve has played an active role with the Estate Planning Council of Cleveland, having served as developments reporter at its monthly meetings for four years, program chair and president. For the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association, he has served as chair of its Estate Planning Institute and on its Continuing Legal Education Committee. He is an OSBA Board Certified Specialist in Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Law. He is a software consultant for BNA Estate and Gift Tax Planner, the gold standard in estate planning software produced by the Bureau of National Affairs, Inc., Washington, D.C., and a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. He is a frequent speaker on a wide range of estate planning topics for numerous estate planning councils, bar associations, professional associations, financial planning groups and charitable organizations, and an author and editor of several national and state publications.
