Susan D. Krantz, partner at Zinner & Co. and Michael B. Klein, partner at Ciuni & Panichi, Inc. will help you gain the tools to exercise financial oversight responsibilities and assess the financial health of a nonprofit organization. Plus, learn about basic nonprofit financial statements and how to interpret them.

About the Speakers

Mike Klein is a Partner in Ciuni & Panichi, Inc.’s Audit and Accounting Services Department. He graduated magna cum laude from Cleveland State University in 1987 with a major in accounting. In 1991, Mike earned his Master of Business Administration degree with an emphasis in finance from Cleveland State University. Prior to joining the firm in 1995, Mike gained experience in the audit department of an international accounting firm. Mike oversees the firm’s Not-for-Profit Group. He has extensive experience in this market segment and with the accounting issues that directly impact 501(c)(3) corporations and other not-for-profit organizations. He is experienced in performing audits in compliance with Government Auditing Standards and generally accepted auditing standards. He has the overall responsibility for the audit from preliminary planning and fieldwork to the issuance of financial statements and management recommendation letters. He is also responsible for the planning and performance of Uniform Guidance (federal funds) and program-specific audits and issuance of the related reports on internal controls over compliance requirements, compliance with terms and provisions of contracts, awards, and grants. He reviews the tax returns for these clients that include social service agencies, health-related agencies, religious, social clubs, museums, labor unions, educational foundations, and private foundations, among others. Mike devotes significant attention to advising the firm’s not-for-profit clients on a variety of matters, including financial statement presentation options, cost reporting, cost-effective internal control solutions, and organizational assessments, among others.

Susan Krantz specializes in accounting and auditing services with an emphasis on audits of not-for-profit organizations. Following work with a Big 4 firm, Susan joined Zinner & Co. in 1990 and became a partner in 1999. She has over 35 years of experience in accounting and auditing. Susan serves a diverse client base, which includes clients in manufacturing, distribution, service, labor unions and not-for-profit organizations, among others. In addition, she performs audits of employee benefit plans. Susan is highly knowledgeable about the changing rules, regulations, and standards affecting not-for-profit organizations. She is sensitive to her clients’ needs for maintaining and enhancing management effectiveness, financial viability, dealing with stringent government regulations, meeting budget constraints, and accomplishing their mission. She has extensive experience supervising audits performed under Government Auditing Standards, including compliance for Uniform Guidance. Susan is responsible for the technical review of all client financial statements to monitor their compliance and is also in charge of the firm’s quality control procedures and peer review. Additionally, she serves as the firm’s Human Resources partner. Susan graduated Summa Cum Laude from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, Accounting. She was a member of Beta Alpha Psi, Beta Gamma Sigma, as well as various other honor societies.
