About the Program
The risk of needing long-term care in old-age is significant and paying for long-term care can be expensive. Moreover, Medicare and Medicaid don’t cover all the costs. As society ages, the need for long-term care will only increase. One might expect that the private market for long-term care insurance would be healthy and growing. Yet surprisingly, only 10 percent of American retirees have a private insurance policy. How do Americans currently cope with long-term care risk? Why is the private insurance market so small? And what can public policy do to help families prepare for and cope with a long-term care event?
