About the Program
Joe and Jackie will provide the annual summary of highlights of the 56th Annual Heckerling Institute on Estate Planning hosted by the University of Miami School of Law.

About the Speakers

Joseph M. Mentrek is a Partner with the Cleveland-based law firm of Calfee, Halter & Griswold, LLP and serves as chairman of the firm’s estate and succession planning group. Joe works closely with his clients and their advisors to develop and implement creative strategies and tax-sensitive solutions to achieve their wealth transfer and business transition goals.  Joe’s background truly embodies the multi-disciplinary values of the Estate Planning Council of Cleveland, as his affiliation with Calfee followed many years of practice in public accounting and financial services as a vice-president and director of the Wealth Center at Meaden & Moore, Ltd.  Prior to his time at Meaden & Moore, Joe practiced with the law firm now known as McCarthy, Lebit, Crystal & Liffman and the international accounting and business advisory firm now known as EY.  Joe is an active and visible member of the Cleveland estate planning community, and is a frequent speaker and author on topics concerning estate planning, estate, gift and income taxation, business succession planning, and personal financial planning.  He is a member of the Ohio State Bar Association and the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association, and was chairman of the CMBA Estate Planning Institute in 2011.  Joe is a past president and trustee of the Estate Planning Council of Cleveland, where he remains an active supporter of its committees and initiatives.  Joe was honored as the council’s Distinguished Estate Planner in 2015.  Joe is also an active member of several estate planning discussion groups, as well as numerous planned giving advisory boards in the greater Cleveland area.

Jaclyn M. Vary is a Partner in Calfee's Estate and Succession Planning and Administration group. She joined Calfee in 2016, and she was elected Partner in 2020. In her practice Jaclyn counsels individuals, fiduciaries, families and businesses in the areas of estate planning and administration, probate litigation, business succession planning and nonprofit law. Jaclyn develops customized estate plans to achieve her clients' goals and assists families with planning for transitional periods. Jaclyn is also well-versed on many different aspects of charitable planning through her work representing nonprofit organizations and individuals. She frequently negotiates gift agreements for her clients. She also manages regulatory matters for private foundations and public charities. Jaclyn is currently serving as chair of EPC Cleveland's membership committee and the CMBA Estate Planning Probate and Trust Law Section’s Head of Communications and incoming Head of Programming.

Continuing Education – EPC Cleveland will request approval for this program from the CFP® Board of Standards for CFP® designation holders. A certificate of completion will be available for those AEP®, CPA, and CWS designees who feel the program satisfies their continuing education requirements.

Reservation Policy

IN PERSON: All attendees are encouraged to register in advance and walk-in reservations will be accepted on a space-available basis only.  The meeting cost is $32 for members when paid in advance before noon 05/03/22.  If you reserve and are unable to attend, please call the office to cancel by noon 05/03/22 to avoid a no-show reservation billing.

VIRUTAL: All attendees must register in advance. The meeting cost is $10 for members. You will receive login credentials with your registration confirmation email.
