About the Program
As the National Practice Leader of Northern Trust’s Estate Settlement business, David has insight into estates across the country. This global view allows David to identify areas that tend to cause friction within the family, that can lead to extended estate administrations, increased expenses and litigation. David will highlight a few themes and discuss options to address these common pitfalls prior to and during estate administration.
About the Speaker
David Garten is a Senior Vice President and the National Practice Leader for Northern Trust’s Estate Settlement Services. He has 25 years of financial services experience, serving private clients in the areas of trust administration, wealth transfer planning, estate settlement and investment management. David has a diversified financial services career with Northern Trust having previously served as the Senior Fiduciary Officer and a managing director of the Pacific Northwest Region in Seattle, as well as Manager of Estate Settlement Services for California and the Estate Settlement Services Practice Leader for the West Region. Prior to joining Northern, David was a Vice President and Trust Advisor with US Bank, Private Client Reserve in Seattle. David grew up in the Pacific Northwest fishing, crabbing, clamming and spending time outdoors. David and his wife Andria enjoy tennis and now live in Pepper Pike, OH with their two young daughters.

Continuing Education – EPC Cleveland will request approval for this program from the CFP® Board of Standards for CFP® designation holders, from the Supreme Court of Ohio for Ohio attorneys to receive CLE credit, and from the Ohio Department of Insurance. A certificate of completion will be available for those AEP®, CPA, and CWS designees who feel the program satisfies their continuing education requirements.
Covid-19 Information – Effective October 25, 2021, The Estate Planning Council of Cleveland requires all in-person event participants to be fully vaccinated, with proof of full vaccination required*. In addition, all attendees will be asked to wear a mask when not eating or drinking.
EPC Cleveland is also working closely with the Union Club to help mitigate the risks of Covid-19 transmission. Currently, the buffet will be served by staff members wearing a mask, there will be 6 people per table, and social distancing will be encouraged.
Reservation Policy –
IN PERSON: All attendees are encouraged to register in advance and walk-in reservations will be accepted on a space-available basis only. The meeting cost is $32 for members when paid in advance before noon 12/13/21, $45 for members at the door, $45 for guests, and $235 for a table of six (please submit names to admin@epccleveland.org by 12/10/21). If you reserve and are unable to attend, please call the office to cancel by noon 12/13/21 to avoid a no-show reservation billing.
