About the program…
Alan will give a briefing on the education situation in Cleveland, focusing on the collaboration between Breakthrough Schools, one of the highest performing public charter school networks in the entire state of Ohio, and the Cleveland Metropolitan School District.  We’ll hear about the importance of fixing urban education and how that impacts future prosperity in Cleveland.  Then, Alan will share a bit of history of how Breakthrough got started, all the way up to the current partnership with the district, AND a vision for the future.  Please join us for this special locally-focused program.

About the speaker…
Alan Rosskamm is CEO of Breakthrough Charter Schools, a non-profit charter management organization created to support the operation and expansion of some of the best public charter schools in Cleveland—Citizens Academy, Citizens Leadership Academy, The Intergenerational School, and Entrepreneurship Prep.  Over the past two years, the network has grown to ten schools serving 3,000 students with plans to grow to 20 schools by 2020.  Breakthrough’s schools are the only charter schools sponsored by the Cleveland Metropolitan School District.  Under Mr. Rosskamm’s leadership, Breakthrough Charter Schools has been a founding member of a unique coalition including CMSD, The Greater Cleveland Partnership (Chamber), the Cleveland Teachers Union, the city’s largest foundations, and The Mayor’s Office. This coalition achieved broad bi-partisan legislative support for Mayor Jackson’s Plan to reshape Cleveland into a high-performing portfolio school district, where students and families can choose from a variety of high-quality educational options. Mr. Rosskamm was President and Chief Executive Officer of Jo-Ann Stores, Inc., from 1985 until 2006, during which time Jo-Ann became the nation’s largest retailer of fabrics and sewing notions and one of the largest retailers of crafts, operating approximately 800 stores. He joined Jo-Ann Stores in 1978, and remained a member of the Board of Directors until the Company went private in March, 2011.  Mr. Rosskamm holds a BA from Swarthmore College, a JD from the University of Chicago Law School, and an MBA from Case Western Reserve University.
